The Greatest... Of All Time...

I regret to report on the passing of a real icon, a real legend, the type of individual that the psuedo-famous people of these times wish they had just an iota of his credibility.... Muhammad Ali has passed on to the next reality.

in a world full of people famous for being naked, arrogant, or rich, here is a man who is world renowned for all of the right reasons. principled, dedicated and a living example of the pursuit of excellence; in his craft, in his life, and in his community.

in this age of the 'do for me-ers', Ali NEVER strayed away from his sense of duty to his community. he never acted as if his success and pursuits were disassociated from the plight of those who were not able to achieve or earn as he did. he often demonstrated that he understood that he was an image important for others to see, in the flesh and not just on tv. little kids living in poverty in oppressive conditions world wide understood that one of them had ascended the same condition  as they and that one day they could too. from Olympic gold to world titles, he was always the same man, never putting on airs, never presenting himself to be above the people because of his celebrity. he never turned his back on the tradition that raised him. or the people that birthed him. he never claimed he was the people's champion. the PEOPLE anointed him that.

in these times when so many are grieving his passing, i feel a sense of happiness. i know he once said that he believed the Most High gave him his illness to remind him that GOD is the greatest. while i can understand the humbleness attached to the statement, i can also detect the undercurrent of tragedy associated with it as well. and i am happy that the man is now divorced from his affliction, altho my prayers are reserved for his family, in the hope that comfort rules the day. im sure its a day they were prepared for, just like my dad prepared us.

but it still wont mean that they wont miss him. or grieve him. so for them, i pray for strength. and with an unselfish sense, i release one of my childhood heroes to always reside among the constellations of our collective consciousness. he now resides in the halls of world history, among the Ghandi's and Malcolm X's and King's of our century, as one who with personal sacrifice stood by his principles and stood for an idea, an ideal and his community. he who belonged to us now belongs to world.. to eternity... to all... as The Greatest... of all time...

Afeni Shakur Has Died, age 69 (RIP)

We are saddened to hear the passing of Tupac Shakur's mom. She was definitely responsible for bringing a special energy into this world. We give our sincerest condolences to the family.

As reported by The New York Daily News....

Afeni Shakur, mother of hip-hop legend Tupac, dead at 69

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Updated: Tuesday, May 3, 2016, 11:26 AM
Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of late rap legend Tupac Shakur who was the subject of one of his most iconic songs and who oversaw his posthumous legacy, has died. She was 69 years old.
Marin County deputies responded to Shakur’s home in Sausalito, Calif., Monday night after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning. She was taken to a local hospital and died just before 10:30 p.m.
Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams, changed her name when she moved to New York City and joined the Black Panther movement. She and other party members were arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple, busy city landmarks.

In May 1971, was acquitted on all charges after she represented herself in court — and she gave birth to Tupac just one month later.

She was the subject of his 1995 song “Dear Mama,” in which Tupac detailed his childhood struggles and respect for his mother.
“There's no way I can pay you back/But the plan is to show you that I understand/You are appreciated,” he rapped.

After her son’s 1996 shooting death, Shakur took over the late rapper’s estate, which reportedly earns about $900,000 each year.
Dina LaPolt, a California attorney who handled Tupac Shakur’s estate for nearly 10 years, fought back tears as she described Shakur, who inspired the lawyer to open up her own frim in 2001.
“She’s an advocate. She’s an activist. She taught me never to compromise your values — to always fight for what you believe in,” she told the Daily News Tuesday.
LaPolt oversaw the legal work behind 11 posthumously released albums while she represented the estate between 2001 and 2010.
The lawyer developed a close professional relationship with Shakur, who LaPolt described as “one of the smartest people I’ve ever worked with,” citing how the Black Panther represented herself in court. The activist mother also influenced LaPolt’s personal life, she said.

“I met her when I was 91 days sober. Now I’m 18 years sober,” she said. “She was very, very instrumental in my life. I carry her with me to this day.”
Earlier this year, Shakur filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Gust Davis, and was allegedly in a legal battle over the fortune, TMZ reported. Davis demanded half of the monthly $20,000 Shakur took home every month.
In 2014, Shakur co-produced “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” a Broadway jukebox musical featuring her son’s works.
A movie about Tupac's life, "All Eyez on Me," is set for release in November, with Danai Gurira cast as Shakur. Shakur served as an executive producer for the film.
The Marin County Sheriff's Coroner's Office will lead the investigation to determine the cause and manner of Shakur's death.
This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

Phife Dawg passes away at 45 years old

dam... id like to express my shock and condolences at the passing of Phife of A Tribe Called Quest. such a groundbreaking group, these dudes were part of the definition of the sound of an era. thats no small feat. hip hop is feeling the absence of a vital part of its legacy. and we can all feel it.

this is what we experienced and what i tell my son all the time, 'we came up in an era where being EXCELLENT was celebrated. being original, actually being the inventor of a new idea or concept. Phife was part of that era. he helped define it. and he died from the same illness that took my mother. RIP...

RIP to the original LEE, LEE 163d, NY graffiti legend

today i was saddened to hear about the passing of one of the easily most unsung bombing legend from NYC, the incomparable LEE163d, from the Bronx, NY. with all due respect to LEE, the one from Wild Style, THIS is the guy that set off the franchise.

a contemporary of the legendary PHASE 2, LEE163d was a writer from the early 70s, sometime after 1971 and was said by many to have tore the city up on the streets as well as the trains. me personally, i loved the way he wrote his name with style that was all his own. its impossible to confuse his tag with any other. for me, style is when u can see something, going by at 40mph and STILL be able to know exactly what u just saw. tell me u cant do that with his style.

Nuff respect to the pioneers, wherever they come from. Nuff respect to a legend that doesnt get his just due.

Here we see LEE163d with his man, the legendary PHASE 2, somewhere in NYC. date unknown, early 70s most likely. also pictured, BARBARA 62, a female graff legend from NYC.

LEE 163d on the front of the train, alongside one of the first graff writers in NY, JUNIOR 161. also appearing in the photo is TOP CAT 126, a Philly native that moved to NY, rocking the Broadway Elegant style that he brought with him to NY from Philly. You can see how different his style of writing is next to everything else.

I was very suprised when i found this picture online. a LEE 163d with a TC126, for TOP CAT 126. Two very legendary and influential graffiti writers, at the same time in one place.
